Nutrigenetics: A novel approach towards personalized nutrition

Speakers: Dr. Vimal S. Karani (Associate Professor in Nutrigenetics& Nutrigenomics, Hugh Sinclair Unit of Human Nutrition, Department of Food & Nutritional Sciences, School of Chemistry Food & Pharmacy, University of Reading, UK) and Ms. Janani Tamilvanan (Founder & Course Instructor at Institute of Nutrigenetics, India)

Date: 7th November 2020

Dr. Vimal started his session with defining and explaining what is nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics. He talked about the D-CarDia study which is sponsored by British Heart Foundation and GeNuine Collaboration (gene-Nutrient Interactions) which is funded by various funding organization. He discussed how vitamin D deficiency is associated with various diseases. He also discussed the implication of different diet regimes towards weight management in different populations and how it varies based on genetic make-up. He discussed in details what is nutrigenomics and epigenetics and the role of nutri-genetics and personalized nutrition. He ended his presentation with impact of diet on gut microbiome and its correlation with an increased risk of CVD.

Ms. Janani discussed about genetic variability among humans contribute to the human metabolic individuality in relation to disease condition such as diabetes. She showed how certain nutrients affect gene expression and thereby affecting disease prevalence She explained how diabetes is caused by multiple modifications and how it is a multi-factorial condition. She emphasized the need for validation for diabetes and nutrigenetic practice. She also mentioned that along with nutrigenetics, a dietitian should be aware of all metabolic pathways before planning a diet and how macro-nutrient intake can tweaked based on genetic make-up. She ended her session by sharing a list of gene specific nutrient recommendation.
